Action

Quinine Tablets are primarily used for the treatment of malaria, particularly in cases where the malaria parasite is resistant to other antimalarial drugs such as chloroquine. It is effective against Plasmodium falciparum, the most dangerous type of malaria parasite. Quinine works by interfering with the parasite's ability to metabolize hemoglobin, leading to its death. Additionally, quinine has been historically used for the treatment of nocturnal leg cramps, although this use is now less common due to potential side effects.

Dosage and Administration

  • Adults:Malaria: The usual dose is 650 mg (1 tablet) three times daily for 7 days. The tablets should be taken with food to minimize gastrointestinal upset.Leg Cramps: 200-300 mg at bedtime, but this use is not recommended due to the risk of serious side effects.
  • Children:Malaria: Dosing is based on body weight, typically 10 mg/kg three times daily for 7 days. The total daily dose should not exceed the adult dose.
  • Administration Notes:
  • Quinine Tablets should be taken with a full glass of water and preferably with food to reduce stomach irritation.
  • It is important to complete the full course of treatment, even if symptoms improve before the medication is finished.
  • Regular monitoring of blood counts, liver function, and kidney function is recommended, especially during prolonged use.

Storage

  • Store Quinine Tablets at room temperature (15-30°C).
  • Keep the container tightly closed and protect from light and moisture.
  • Do not store in the bathroom, as humidity can affect the stability of the medication.
  • Keep out of reach of children to prevent accidental ingestion.
