Vitamin B12 injection is primarily used for:
- Megaloblastic Anemia: It treats anemia caused by vitamin B12 deficiency, often due to poor absorption.
- Neurological Disorders: It helps manage neurological symptoms associated with vitamin B12 deficiency, such as peripheral neuropathy.
- Pernicious Anemia: It is used in conditions where the body cannot absorb vitamin B12 from the gastrointestinal tract.
- Supportive Therapy: It can be used as an adjunct in treating certain gastrointestinal disorders and in patients with poor nutrition.
Dosage and Administration
The dosage of Vitamin B12 injection varies based on the condition being treated:
- Adults:For megaloblastic anemia: 0.025–0.1 mg (25–100 mcg) intramuscularly daily or every other day.For neurological disorders: The dose may be increased as needed, typically 0.05–0.2 mg (50–200 mcg) every other day.
- Children:25–100 mcg per injection, either daily or every other day. Special care should be taken to avoid repeated injections in the same site.
- Administration Instructions:
- Vitamin B12 injection is typically administered intramuscularly. It should be given slowly to minimize discomfort and potential side effects.
- The injection site should be rotated to prevent tissue irritation.
Storage
Vitamin B12 injection should be stored in a cool, dry place, protected from light. It is essential to keep the vials tightly closed to prevent contamination. The product should be stored at room temperature (15°C to 30°C or 59°F to 86°F) and kept out of reach of children.
